Weekends

February 6th, 2012 by admin

Hey everyone. It’s strange that on the weekends I actually feel even more depressed than during the week. While I’m in school still going to finish my bachelor’s degree, there are some students I have made friends with and see during the weekdays. I live alone and pretty much keep to my house over the weekends. I used to have my brother, sister-in-law and 3 nephews living in my same town but they moved over Christmas break to New Mexico. So I get a lonely feeling more often than not.

I feel more optimistic during the weekdays as well. I procrastinate my homework until the last few hours on Sunday evenings even though I have 3 day weekends. As long as I am doing something productive every day I feel okay. I at least have to leave the house once a day. Otherwise I feel gross and hide away in my house.

So strange how depression sucks you in daily and holds you hostage until you choose to make a difference in your day. People without depression don’t understand the experience and think someone would be able to snap out of it but it’s not that easy. If it were, I don’t think there’d be as many people depressed.

It is perfectly natural to feel down or in a not-so good mood at times. Many people have moments when they are sad lonely or have symptoms of depression. However those symptoms generally do not last long. Major or clinical depression is a debilitating condition where a person experiences extended periods of sadness coupled with other symptoms and these feelings become quite unbearable or overwhelming and prohibits the individual from leading a normal active life. Depression is an illness that affects millions of people worldwide and if left untreated it can worsen and become a chronic condition. What’s even worse is depression can often lead to suicide. This is why it is so important to recognize what the symptoms of depression are in order to determine how a person should be diagnosed and treated.

According to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) the most common symptoms of depression include:
- Decreased energy and fatigue.
- Feelings of extreme sadness or hopelessness
- Excessive sleeping or insomnia
- Loss of interest in things that an individual once found pleasurable
- Difficulty remembering details and making decisions
- Incredible feelings of worthlessness guilt and helplessness
- Constant irritability
- Loss of appetite or overeating
- Suicidal thoughts or even attempts

Again it is very important that a person who is exhibiting one or more of these symptoms over a period of time seek medical help because according to the NIMH more than one out of every ten persons who is experiencing depression will commit suicide because the feelings are just so overwhelming and they think that something is wrong with them or that they are all alone. It is important for a person with depression concerns to know that depression is nothing to be ashamed of it is a clinical condition that can affect anyone but treatment is the best way to combat it.

Chronic Depression

November 2nd, 2011 by GuestPoster

Though major depression hurts a person’s emotional, psychosocial and physical states on varying levels, a less severe form of depressive condition referred to as Dysthimia also exists. Many men and women have dealt with this chronic depression for a long time and a good number of health plan coverage expenditures are focused on clinical treatments for this condition.

Those with this psychiatric condition deal with chronic depression but are still able to retain adequate social and psychological function. The one notable feature of dysthymics is that they are constantly plagued by thoughts of unhappiness and absence of fulfillment.

As of the moment, there is no definitive cause for chronic depression. It is believed that constant exposure to stress, negative life experiences, failures or frustrations and problems with family, relationships or career may increase the chances of developing this condition. Experts also view depression as a result of imbalances in brain chemistry responsible for regulating emotions.

Chronic depression hurts on an emotional and physical level that is much milder compared to major depressive states. Those with dysthymia may have problems with sleep. They could be deprived of adequate rest or at times may have too much of it. Often, dysthemics are burdened with constant feelings of hopelessness, emptiness and loss of self worth. Maintaining focus with work or school tasks may become a challenge for most while others may exhibit extreme changes in appetite. Some have considerable loss of it while others may begin to over eat. Overall, those with chronic depression are often seen as constantly in fatigue and may have lost interest for many things, even those which have previously been rewarding or pleasurable for the individual. Physical symptoms like pain, discomfort in many areas of the body as well as gastrointestinal issues that do not respond to treatment may also develop.

There are no lab diagnostics to detect this problem and most cases are usually diagnosed through symptomatic assessment and review of family history. Manifestations of chronic cases of depression are usually characterized by prolonged persistence but appear to be less severe compared to major depression symptoms.

Herbs and various tonics have been in use by people for thousands of years. It is even believed that nature already contains everything we need to stay healthy. Natural remedies are being studied today more than ever to see how they may relief and heal many medical conditions. We now have a number of scientifically formulated natural supplements with very promising treatments for depression symptoms. They work together with the natural chemistry of the body to stimulate production of Dopamine, Seratonin and Norepinephrine which improves the overall mood and assists with anxiety and depression symptoms.

In addition to the above, we must emphasize the value of yoga and meditation as viable practices for controlling depression symptoms. Meditation and yoga have been practiced for centuries for spiritual purposes. It was more recently that Westerners have embraced them and allowed them into our lives. Scientists have confirmed that during yoga and meditation sessions, the brains activity shifts from the anxiety prone right cortex to the calmer left cortex, thus stimulating a more peaceful state of mind. Among noteworthy styles of meditation are Vipassana, Zen and Japa. Some of the better known yoga practices are Hatha, Raja and Bikram. It is recommended that professional instructor is obtained, or at the very least, a comprehensive on-line program is followed for best ways to beat depression.
